The only weak spot is the shifter, which feels a bit spongy during gear changes. This is a car that loves to be pressed and gives you the confidence to explore its potential. The car feels much livelier across the rev range, turn-in is crisper, the steering much more communicative. The combination of engine upgrades, stiffer suspension, more responsive steering, aggressive tires and upgraded brakes makes the R/T a complete package.

The Neon R/T is equipped only with a 5-speed manual and a quicker 16:1 steering ratio, as opposed to the stock 18:1 rack-and-pinion unit. If this is one of the benefits of the DaimlerChrysler merger, then mark me down as being all for it. Fit and finish on the interior is top-notch. The bucket seats with special stitching and bolstering are comfortable and supportive. The dash is clad in a new soft-touch material, and there are colored bezels around the dashboard's center stack and around the white-face gauges (including a 140-mph speedometer), which further adds to the upscale aura. Upgrades to the Neon interior give it the feel of a small 4-door luxury sedan. Inside, the R/T can be outfitted with a leather interior. Something should be done to either lower the body or fill up the wheel wells. The R/T's low-profile tires, the strong forward stance of the body and large wheel openings give the car the appearance that it is floating above the tires rather than riding down on them. The ACR Neon, designed for more budget-conscious racers, dispenses with the spoiler and favors a 15-in. alloy wheels with low-profile P195/50R-16 Goodyear RS-A performance tires. That package includes a rear spoiler, stiffer sport suspension and 16-in.
